For high school programs, the US is still the most popular destination to go to. No matter how you phrase, it is the land of superlatives, opportunity and a place of contrast - either way the country is very versatile and goes far beyond Hollywood and fast food.

School System

Generally speaking, high school in the US includes four years - from 9th to 12th grade:

  • 9th Grade - Freshman
  • 10th Grade - Sophomore
  • 11th Grade - Junior
  • 12th Grade - Senior

At the beginning for your school stay you will be places into one of these class levels. Usually you are placed in accordance with your home country grade, but that does not have to be the case at all times. No matter which high school you attend in the US, everyday school life will be very different from your home school. This is because high school in the US plays a different role in the student´s daily life: as it is the center of the social life for the students.

After the classes, you will meet in different sports teams, working groups and clubs. American high schools have more to offer than just football and Cheerleading. You can join the chess club, work on the school newspaper or play in a band or theater group. You will also meet your classmates on the weekends to cheer for your local high school team at a sports event. It is this sense of community and this team at a sports spirit what makes up the famous "school spirit" in American high schools.
