School System
The Italian school system is similar to the French one. After middle school, from 11 and 14, you move on to the 5-year upper school, the Scuola Media Superiore. International students attend general education High Schools. The Italian school principal determines in which grade students will be placed.
Language Skills
It is not necessary to have any knowledge of the Italian language beforehand, at the beginning of your stay in Italy, you can get by with English. After a few weeks, you will speak and understand the language easily, as you will read and hear Italian all day long.
Subject Selection
Those who opt for the grammar school can choose between different sectors, like art, science, humanism and languages. Languages are playing an increasingly important role in Italy. For example, English is already taught in elementary school, followed later by a second foreign language such as German or French. In addition to compulsory subjects such as Italian, English, history and mathematics, there are also elective subjects. The Italian school year is divided into two semesters.
Host Family
You live with an Italian host family who will teach you a lot about life and traditions in Italy. The Italians are very hospitable people, so you will be welcomed as a new member of the family.
