If the course of study is in German or is partially in German, international students will have to prove the required German Language Proficiency.

The most current certificates of proficiency include the DSH and TestDaF(Test For German as a Foreign Language certificates). The TestDaF is a language test for foreign learners of German who plan to study in Germany or who require recognized certification of their language skills. The TestDaF certificate is recognized by almost all universities in Germany.

Regardless of the course of study, students are advised to have a command of German corresponding to level B2.

The examination results are assigned to one of three levels:

  • TestDaF-level 5 (TDN 5 – TestDaF level 5; equivalent to CEF: C1-C2)
  • TestDaF-level 4 (TDN 4 – TestDaF level 4; equivalent to CEF: B2-C1)
  • TestDaF-level 3 (TDN 3 – TestDaF level 3; equivalent to CEF: B2)

Should you reach at least TDN 4 or TDN 5 in each subtest, the students can take up studies in Germany as far as language is concerned (naturally the remaining academic and legal requirements must also be met).

Sprachcaffe offers various courses to achieve the necessary language level for studying in Germany.

Standard and Intensive Courses: A1 – B1

The student, who e.g. is a basic user of the language and has done A2 in his home country, can join the standard or intensive course with us. If the student does not have any knowledge of German, he/she can start at the A1 level.

Pathways B2 Course

Once the student successfully finishes the B1 level, he will be admitted to the language course, specially designed for the Pathways Germany program. The focus is mainly on the academic usage of language. Apart from that, the student gets familiar with the TestDaF course format. We reserve the right to cancel the B2 Pathway course if it has not received the minimum registrations required. In this case, student will participate  in the regular B2 group course.

TestDaF-Exam preparation course

Once the Pathways B2 level course is successfully finished, the student registers for the TestDaF-examination. After completion of this course, the student can take the TestDaF examination. The application procedure is part of the course; the respective teachers help the students to complete the procedure.

When a student inquires about studying in Germany or if the agent wants the student to think about Germany as an option for higher studies, it is vital that the student is well informed about the entire procedure.

The Conditional Letter of Acceptance greatly increases the chances of getting a visa, especially for students coming from non-EU countries. The C(LOA) confirms that the student is admitted to the language course and has a conditional acceptance to one of the partner universities of Sprachcaffe, and states which conditions need to be fulfilled.

The following conditions are common to all students:

  • Proof of completion of German language courses: minimum of 1200 hours.
  • Attested copy of DSH-exam 2 or 3 OR TestDaF Level 4 or 5 certificate. (Note: The University of Applied Sciences Jena does not offer German courses/exams (DSH))
  • Attested and translated* copy of higher education entrance qualification. (e.g. A levels, high school diploma)

Depending on the individual case, other conditions may include the following:

  • One-year bridging course (Studienkolleg) with a successful completion of the final exams.
  • Proof of a 10-week technical internship. (It may be completed within the first 3 semesters of studies.)
  • Attested and translated* copies of certificates of successful completion of university semesters in the home country. (The standard duration of the course should be visible.)

The letter will first be sent to the responsible person at Sprachcaffe, who will then forward a translated copy to the agency. Please find an example of the C(LOA) EN in the attachment.

*Translations must be in English or German language.

Studienkolleg is a German educational institution that offers a two-semester, subject-specific preparatory course for university only for those students whose high school leaving certificate is not recognized as equivalent to the Abitur (higher education qualification) required to study in Germany. The attendance to a preparatory course in a Studienkolleg will be highlighted in the C (LOA).

Together with other international young people, students will:

  • Learn the German language for academic usage and subject-specific terminology for their chosen field of studies
  • Acquire the basic knowledge and methods that are specific to their course of studies
  • Develop individual strategies for learning
  • Acquire the necessary social competencies for living in a different culture

There are no tuition fees for Studienkolleg, but there is an administrative fee between 100 and 400 euros per semester. One should also consider living costs, insurance, and costs of study materials.

In the case that the student does not receive the C(LOA) from the partner university, they may still apply for a visa and come to Germany for language courses. During this time, the student will be fully assisted in applying for university through the governmental online platform uni-assist.

The core tasks of uni-assist are:

  • Examining whether the submitted school/university certificates qualify for admission to university studies in Germany according to the criteria set by the German Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZaB))
  • Evaluating whether the student possesses the language competencies and other requirements specific to the course of study set by the respective university
  • Calculating the German equivalent of the foreign final degree grade

In the event that all the requirements are fulfilled, uni-assist forwards the application electronically to the chosen university with a certificate (Vorprüfungs-dokumentation (VPD)) that allows the student to apply directly to the university. Otherwise, the student will be informed of what he/she needs to do in order to qualify for admission.
